The Belmont Lofts Charlottesville, Virginia The Belmont Lofts occupy a site at the edge of the central residential district of Belmont along the railroad tracks. The reclaimed 'brownfield' site is seen as an edge to both the neighborhood and the industrial railroad yard. Historically, this site would have been occupied by warehouses serving the rail yards and creating a buffer between the two districts. The design concept for The Belmont Lofts, selected by the City of Charlottesville in a design competition, includes 'The Warehouses', containing forty-two residences betwen 800 and 2200 sf; 'The Park', a 3-acre natural area that preserves some unique urban woods with a variety of indigenous trees; and 'The Neighborhood Garden', a carefully located series of cultivation plots for residents to grow vegetablesand flowers. Parking for the 42 residences is provided under each building minimizing the impact of automobiles on the site and preserving the majority of the property for the natural park area. The units within the buildings vary to include economically priced studio units and luxury penthouses with roof terraces overlooking downtown Charlottesville and with direct views of Monticello to the east.
