The Covenant School commissioned a design competition for the design of a new campus located in Charlottesville Virginia. The 24-acre site needed to accommodate a middle and upper school for 600 students with athletic fields parking and a future performing arts center. The firms, VMDO, Bond Comet Westmoreland, Train and Spencer, and the joint venture of Wardell/ Boney Architects were asked to submit designs and preliminary cost estimates. The development of the site along Hickory Road will largely driven by the economics of placing three athletic fields on the existing topography. We have chosen to use the largest field (baseball) to organize the geometry of the site and entrance. The main road follows the radius of the field on the approach to the 'acropolis' of the school. The field is set into the site, creating a foreground to the complex of buildings serving the school. The radial slope around the field is planted with trees providing a rhythm leading toward the academic buildings. These buildings are set on the largest rise of the site giving them the visual importance they deserve. The majority of the parking is located beyond the main building complex allowing the buildings to be set in the landscape.
