The joint venture of Wardell/Boney Architects was selected through an invited design competition to design the new campus for The Covenant School. The 24-acre campus for the middle and upper school serves 550 students. The 96,000 sf building is organized around four academic houses each serving 135 middle and upper school students. The stated goal of the school was to create an environment where learning happens in the context of community school life. The four houses face a common student quadrangle overlooking the soccer fields beyond a classical colonnade. Each house is designed around a central locker commons where students can meet and socialize Each house also has a common study/lounge overlooking the athletic fields where smaller group seminars, informal discussion groups, and individual study is anticipated. These lounges form the classical pavilions overlooking the grounds of the school. The main lobby links arriving students directly to the main student lounge, library/media center, theater, and cafeteria. This area, which fronts on the main 'quad' forms the heart of community life for the students. A transverse gallery connects this central area to each of the academic communities, the fine arts complex and athletic center.
