Private Residence Fluvanna County, Virginia This 125-acre site in rural Fluvanna County rises from the road through an open meadow and features both a stream and a lake. The new Georgian residence was located just off the brow of the hill in order to maximize the views of the landscape while preserving the integrity of the natural topography. The formal presentation of the house is focused on the main entrance with symmetrical bay windows on either side. The carriage house provides an intimacy to the entrance court while separating the public areas from the more informal rear gardens and pool. The dialogue between the public/formal spaces in the house and the private/ informal spaces is articulated through the style and detail of each space. The public spaces (i.e. living room, billiard room, and dining room) are all detailed in traditional Georgian fashion while the private/informal spaces are detailed more personally to reflect the contemporary tastes of the owners. Terraces and porches, which overlook the pond, the vineyards, and the river in the distance, provide a transition between the house and the landscape.
