This new residence on seven wooded acres needed to serve the needs of a family with four daughters while providing a retreat space for the parents. The mother is a potter who collects works of other regional artists as well. The house needed to provide a gallery for both her work and those she collects. It was also important to build this new residence using sustainable principles including passive solar strategies for heating and cooling. To address the sustainable goals of the client, the house stretched itself along an east west axis to maximize the solar collection of the solarium while providing gallery space along the north side of the house. The kitchen, dining and living room create a central core where the family gathers. The eastern end of the house is designed to provide the four daughters with their living space. The family room fronts on the pool outside and a 'back stair' provides direct access from the upstairs bedrooms to the kitchen, breakfast room, and solarium. The master bedroom and library are connected to the children's end by a bridge through the two story living room. The passive solar design reduced energy costs by 65%.
