Redcliffe, a nineteenth century stone farmhouse with a two story south facing portico, had received numerous additions during the twentieth century. None of the additions, however, took advantage of spectacular western views of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The current owners wished to organize their living spaces toward these views. To this end the plan of the house was reorganized creating a great room, kitchen and study on the west side of the house. Floor to ceiling windows and doors maximize the exposure of these spaces to the landscape while allowing furniture to gather around a grand stone fireplace. Integral to this ensemble of rooms is a dining terrace with exterior fireplace that steps down to a landscaped garden and pool. The kitchen is designed from imported English oak fabricated by Watts and Wright. In the eastern wing, two rooms were combined to create a billiard room. A gallery designed for the exhibition of the owner's art collection connects the two wings. Renovations throughout the house re-established the balance of the plan, creating spaces in keeping with the scale, detail, size and configuration of the original house.
