St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church Staunton, Virginia The Master Plan at St. Francis of Assis Catholic Church aimed to unite a fragmented campus with no clear vehicular and pedestrian paths. In the final iteration of the Master Plan, the new Parish Hall creates an urban piazza to the south of the original sanctuary designed by T.J. Collins. This piazza is the centerpiece of extensive landscape and facility improvements throughout the churchs urban campus, unifying the eclectic buildings owned by the church. The new Parish Hall connects the existing ministry building with a renovated education building allowing for full accessibility to seven distinct levels as well as the central piazza. The architecture of the new construction is consciously understated allowing the gothic character of the original building to hold center stage. The outdoor piazza is seen as a place for significant liturgical events as well as an informal gathering place for the parish before and after weekly services. The gothic glass trellis on the north wall of the Parish Hall itself opens the room to the piazza making the original church the central visual presence of the room.
